Jonathan Klinsmann Moves To Swiss Super League

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland – Now plying his trade for FC St. Gallen 1879, former California men's soccer goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann played his latest match for the Swiss Super League club in a July 30 friendly against German side Borussia Dortmund. St. Gallen fell to Dortmund, 4-1, with Klinsmann making three saves in 90 minutes at Kybunpark.

The 22-year-old joined St. Gallen in June and played in a few friendlies prior to the Dortmund game. He is vying with incumbent Dejan Stojanovic and fellow reserve Nico Strubi for time in goal. The club – which finished sixth in Switzerland last year – currently has four points from a 1-1-1 record and stands in seventh place early in the 2019-20 season.

Klinsmann, who is one of 15 former Golden Bears playing professionally, was a member of German club Hertha Berlin the previous two years. The former U.S. under-20 national team goalie played once for Hertha's senior squad – saving a penalty kick to preserve a 1-1 Europa League tie with Östersunds FK – and played 24 times for Hertha Berlin II.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Jonathan as he continues his professional career with St. Gallen," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "He now has the experience from the last two seasons at Hertha Berlin to really push to be a first-team starter.  He has all of the tools to do great things at St. Gallen. We are very proud of Jonathan and his success thus far."

The Munich-born Klinsmann made his start against Dortmund on the 55th birthday of his father, former U.S. and Germany head coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who attended the match.

Grimes' 2019 Golden Bears start their season on Aug. 30, when they host Omaha at 5 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
