Betel Nut Beauties are public displays that can be consistently seen everywhere in Taiwan. Even though they may damage the image of our society, continue to challenge the law, raise social concerns, and upset the moral code, I still feel that this industry is one of the representational local cultures of Taiwan. It is my goal to use macro views in the field study, presenting the images in a specific time-space coordinates, to lock into the lifestyle, culture, and aesthetics of this group of people in Taiwan. I would also like to document Taiwan at the end of the century as living proof for the future generation. Betel Nut Beauties targets the consumer using the female body as objects of desire, as it is a demonstration of self-awareness by the commoner class of citizens. Along with rising prosperity, this group of people on one hand sees appreciation in their own political views, and on the other hand it demonstrates their sense of aesthetics through the flashing neon signs and see-through betel nut stands. Betel nut beauties belong to the new generations of Taiwan. Born in the postwar era of information overload, the rich materialization lifestyle becomes the goal of living. Temporary jobs are mostly preferred, as they may work at a betel nut stand for a short period of time and then quit, not long after showing up at another booth. They are partly a demonstration of the new set of values; teenagers are lured by the smell of money and materialism, losing their own sense of thought and possibilities. For the photographer, the three years of documented the betel nut beauties’ process of traversing the path of transformation from objects of desire back to human form. This series of images are closer to personal portraits rather than a journalist’s report. As a result, this photographer attempts to reveal the self demonstration of the betel nut beauties (based on monetary factors). (Chen Chin-pao)
