Xabi Alonso is reported to have a clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract that would allow him to become Liverpool boss next summer.

The former midfielder spent five years at the Reds where he won the Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup.

Alonso retired in 2017 and took his first steps into management two years later when he was appointed as Real Sociedad B boss.

He then moved to a struggling Leverkusen last season, joining when they were second from bottom in the Bundesliga after eight games.

The Spaniard worked wonders as he guided them to sixth by the end of the campaign, and they currently sit top and unbeaten this term.

Alonso could be set for another move as BILD report his contract has a clause to let him join one of three European giants next summer.

Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all had the pleasure of having the World Cup winner in their ranks during his career.

His deal at Leverkusen allows him to move to any of those three clubs, and he could do so at the end of this season.

A return to Liverpool may not be unlikely though, with Jurgen Klopp contracted at Anfield until 2026 and very much a fan favourite.

Madrid on the other hand could be his next suitor with current boss Carlo Ancelotti, who previously lauded Alonso, set to join the Brazil national team next year.

Thomas Tuchel guided Bayern to their 33rd Bundesliga title on the final day last season but his overall tenure has been far from perfect.

Whatever Alonso decides to do he is certainly not set to be short of interest given his efforts at Leverkusen thus far.

They have already played against rivals including Bayern and RB Leipzig this season, drawing with the former and beating the latter.

Leverkusen also sit top of their Europa League group thanks to two wins from two as Alonso continues to impress in management.
