This is one of the most colorful of the ‘carcharodon group’ of Neoregelias that also contain the much more well know ‘Tiger’. Native to the area near Santa Maria de Madalena in Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil. Known to be lithophytic in nature, it is most likely also epiphytic as with the others in the group. Maybe the smallest of the group at about 24 inches across. An upright rosette of very stiff, wide leaves are mostly green with apiculate tips that are black above and red below. Abundant random spotting and some blackish-purple veneer is also present along with silver banding on the leaf undersides. With strong light the plant takes on a more compact shape and an overall pinkish cast. This very attractive plant is an in-demand collector item and makes a great, hardy landscape plant. Note that the BSI lists this taxa as ‘Rainbow carcharodon’.
