I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks in my spare time, as my sorta "background music", ya feel? And the Spirited Away soundtrack is naturally my favorite soundtrack (Joe Hisaishi is a MADMAN). I decided to do some dishes and play my Spirited Away soundtrack, and the list of songs pops up, in Japanese. No big deal, right? But no. This became a very big deal. Because... right next to that little thumbnail of Chihiro and Haku holding hands... were the characters いのちの名前. Inochi no Namae. The name of life. And I understood it, without even looking up the romaji or kanji or ANYTHING. And you know what, y'all? I'll be real with you. I honestly started to tear up a bit. Because I'm finally starting to see some progress (despite how small) towards achieving that goal of being fluent, which will in turn give me that "edge" in the hiring process.

Idk if it's worth the time to prepare whole sentences for Anki. Maybe if something's really hard to remember it'd be better in a context but other than that I'm trying with just bare words.

RTK makes it really easy to remember vocab. So just start reading and listening. And also grind vocab in anki if you want. You already associate a meaning with a kanji so now you just have to associate a sound with it. This doesn't apply to all words of course (often times there isn't an apparent connection between the meaning you've associated with a kanji and the compound word that kanji is in), but it applies to a lot of them.

youre supposed to have some command of verbal language before even thinking about trying to read

because everyones locked up in their rooms its gonna take about 10000 hours of anime with english subs before you can start making small utterances that are for all intents and purposes correct japanese

trust me theres a method to the madness the problem is theres no cutting corners low efficiency nihongo time is low efficiency nihongo time and youre gonna need tons of it to start to materialize any kind of understanding of the language pretty much period

so if you must do only bad nihongo time i have given you the solution and the good news is if youre dedicated itll only take a couple years of your life

but once you have your 10000 hours and you start learning how to read and say small things that are correct and the thing to say in certain situations its gonna feel so good and youll be able to chill with these guys not as equals but as a lil 後輩 and move your way up the totem pole from there quite literally living the dream

After mining it and reading for around 3-4 months, as long as you're also doing things from other sources like vidya and attempting easy 小説, you should be reasonably ready to tackle TBS news.

Just don't expect it to be super easy when you do it. It should feel remarkably similar to the "fuck I don't know any of this" experienced at the start of your NHK EASY reading. That always disappears after a few months of adjusting to the new kanji/vocab/grammar.

From there, the highest levels of news will be an easier transition which you can gradually make after some months of TBS, but that's gonna vary entirely based on your sources. NHK's Normal News is often more "written" and therefore has a slightly broader vocab and more specific grammar patterns used. With that, you'll also get much more interesting stories that cover broader topic ranges (which is why it will feel a bit overwhelming once again, but not as bad as before).

So basically
>NHK EASY (6 months max) = wide range of topics, simple vocab, but that doesn't necessarily mean "easy" vocab or kanji
>TBS NEWS (4-8 months to get out of it, but you can always read this) = Transcripts of spoken news which are simpler in terms of "realistic" vocabulary, will keep you very posted on current happenings and events in Japan, 国際 section is often disappointing though. Get used to seeing the word 逮捕 a lot.
>NHK 普通 (never stop reading it) = Broad range of topics which has a wide range of vocabulary to boot. The "NEWS UP!" section is particularly awesome because they tend to focus on very specific subjects, but are rarely limited to what you see up front or on the headline.
>Other news sources = Sky's the limit from there, often you will find some more unique/obscure Kanji/vocab in news/articles from other sources. I've never seen 轢き逃げ written with 轢 in Kanji except in a fucking IGN JAPAN article on Grand Theft Auto, as an example.

A bit of additional info on this post, one of the most underrated and underused features of NHK EASY and TBS NEWS is that there are available "listen to the article" options. NHK EASY is a robot synth voice, but TBS is usually a straight-up word-for-word version read by a news anchor. If I could go back and do one thing differently in the early stages, it would be to utilize those to greater effect. Maybe not mine the written articles, but literally load up every single one onto an MP3 player and listen to the day's news on repeat during down time.

there's only one meta question that I have:
>sentence mining
YES or NO?

adventages:
>you get "closer" to the content you study, you may remember the context of it or something that will make you remember the word better
disadvantages:
>it takes a lot of fucking time

It seems like a question of quantity vs quality - is it better to mine 10 words thru sentences or 20 bare-bones vocab cards?

You can have this exact same effect with word cards.
https://track9.mixtape.moe/havdam.webm
These cards have the advantage that the context makes you remember the word, while sentence cards have the disadvantage of the context reminding you what the word means not making it likely you will recognize it in a different context.

>> No.20125607

not really a disadvantage since you'll be mining various sentences that contain a particular word.

If there is a new grammar pattern you don't know well, mine the damn sentence if you're worried you'll forget it.

Reading shit normally is reinforcing the things you already know, so choose wisely the things you mine. Arbitrarily mining 10 things a day doesn't mean jack shit if 80% of them are filler just to reach that 10th sentence.

Sentence mining vocab is not wise though, unless the usage is so vexing that you need the context to sort it out.

The only reason these guys succeed is because they spend the entire day on input, while most people are lazy about it and that's all you really need. Sentence cards are just useless baggage attached to it because they don't understand word cards.

More than that, you should be mining things that are important to you that you feel you are bound to forget.

Mining a word that you figured out on your own/don't need further help with is just gonna pad your card pile #, which isn't ideal.

Mining a word that is naturally gonna get SRS'd by reality is also pointless, unless you keep on forgetting it all the time. If you're playing ゼルダの伝説 and you keep SEEING 渓谷 or 妖精 but keep forgetting how to read those words, card it so you can stop forgetting right away and let natural exposure do its thing from there. This works well on less-common readings of certain things like 行方 and 遺言 too.

I think vocab then grammar and sentences. But yea not all cards are created equal, hence you can't really compare card to card. Some things seem simple, other things are new to you. Some things take time to learn. I think optimally 2-3 hours a day is the best regardless of number of cards or anything else. It might vary between people but after 3 hours my retention plummets and any less than 2 hours is wasted potential. Listening is easier after hard studying too so I start the morning with reps.

that's a pretty common theme in japanese media. like half of contemporary japanese stories feature a protagonist who transfers somewhere where everyone is miserable and time has stopped, and somewhere near the end of the introduction some old hand says, "this person might be just what this place needs," and slowly the place and the people start to change

Lossless audio is a placebo. No reason to ever use anything more than V0 unless you're an idiot who likes wasting his hard drive space and waiting ages for things to download.

>In psychoacoustics, transparency is the ideal result of lossy data compression. If a lossily compressed result is perceptually indistinguishable from the uncompressed input, then the compression can be declared to be transparent. In other words, transparency is the situation where artifacts are nonexistant or imperceptible.
https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Transparency

>[-V0, -V1, -V2, and -V3] will normally produce transparent results. Audible differences between these presets may exist, but are rare.
>CBR mode will maximize the MP3's bitrate and overall file size. The extra space may allow for some parts of the audio to be compressed with fewer sacrifices, but to date, no one has produced ABX test results demonstrating that perceived quality is ever better than the highest VBR profiles described above.

There's a difference between telling someone "I did A, B and C and it ended up just being a waste of time. Don't make the same mistakes as me." and telling someone "I did A, B and C and it worked really well, but you should do X, Y and Z instead".

Oh trust me it sucks dick. I've basically only rewatched stuff I watched years ago with eng subs but I don't enjoy or look forward to any of it. I just know that it'll give me results if I keep at it. I made it through RTK which was the most tedious and exhausting thing I've ever done in my life, so I'll be OK. I'm waiting until I can understand at least 50% of what's said in most shows, and then I want to start branching to random videos, podcasts, etc. I wonder how long that takes if you're devoting hours per day.

For East and West (東と西): ひheがgotしshe from the east, にnotしshe from the west

For North and South(北と南): みな(everyone*)butみme is from the south, きた quita del norte ("get out of the north" in Spanish),

*みんな means everyone in Japanese

Right and Left(右と左): みぎMickey is always right, ひheだりdares to go left

sure you can go on about whether or not something is being said in a definite or indefinite sense in japanese but it's an uphill battle in a language that has no real need for the distinction and relies on context instead

as for where the brackets go I was just trying to make it clear where the nouns were, so I put them around the noun phrases

adjectives make it more likely for something to be interpreted as definite in all languages, because specifying which of a mass of possible nouns you are referring to is either done with articles, adjectives, or relative clauses, especially in technical writing and everyday communications

this stops being a rule in literary writing, because determinative phrases can instead act as purely descriptive phrases there

to be fair, the communicative roles, rather than syntactical or structural roles, of words in sufficiently complex statements are one of the hardest things to learn about a language, so i don't fault you at all and it's entirely reasonable for even a native speaker of japanese to decide to interpret it one way or the other

but given the rest of the original sentence i'm leaning very heavily (like 90%+) towards the determination interpretation, which turns it into basically an interior topic for the quantity of things that don't work, not a quality of what kinds of things don't work

yes japanese is pretty context driven. So much so that a single verb can be considered a complete sentence. Now go back.

unintentional comedy: Terrace House - Aloha State. All the other seasons are good for listening practice tho.

Decided to rewatch Shiki since it is almost Halloween. It is harder than I expected and there are about a million characters and I can't read any of their names. Despite not understanding most of it, I'm still enjoying it.

How to learn Japanese:

First of all, ask yourself WHY you want to learn Japanese?
>you live in Japan
>you have to read and hear Japanese every day
>as a hobby
>for anime and manga

If you only want to know Japanese for Anime then don't learn Japanese. Japanese is only worth learning if you are either required to know Japanese or as a hobby. Sure, anime watching can be a hobby, but with hobby I mean the focus is on Japanese. It is totally fine to have learning Japanese as a hobby and using Anime as a bonus. But if your focus isn't Japanese you are just wasting your time.

>A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one's leisure time.
And this is the important part. Japanese should be about ENJOYMENT, not about some kind of "goal". This is the biggest mistake most people make outside of Japan. They try to "master" Japanese. You can't master any language. Even as a native speaker who has dedicated his life studying his native language, you will never "master" your language. The language is a tool for other things.
Knowing a language is like having a car. If you never use it, it's worthless and will be unusable if you aren't repairing it from time to time. But if you love working on your car, you can have a great time without even driving it. if you drive your car in addition to working on it, you will have even more out of your hobby repairing cars (or learning Japanese).

For me Japanese was always about enjoyment and about having a great time. If you would ask me how I relax in my free time I would say I learn Japanese. It's the best language on earth and learning the language is just fun. From time to time I watch Animes just for Japanese. Also the Japanese culture is so unique and in theory the greatest culture. But I'm the opposite of most Japan lovers. I just love the "normal" Japanese culture, but the reality in Japan is mostly shit. The education system is a mess, and finding a good and secure job in Japan is as shitty as in every country. Also the forced relationship where you have to invest nearly all your "free" time with your job and your coworkers is just retarded, considering that you want to be married and having kids.

Matt has already discussed whether or not there's a point to learning Japanese (he concludes there isn't).

Is this a reddit post?

Learning japanese for any reason other than anime and other otaku media is a 100% sentence to being horrible at japanese.

I dare anyone here to name someone who has learned japanese to a high level without watching tons of anime.
