The toco toucan, also known as the common toucan or giant toucan, is the largest and probably the best known species in the toucan family. They are found in semi-open habitats throughout a large part of central and eastern South America. Their bright colors provide good camouflage in the dappled light of the rainforest canopy. These birds are not the best at flying, and prefer to hop from tree to tree.

Did you know?
Their oversized colorful bill has made the toco toucan one of the most recognizable birds in the world. The bill accounts for nearly half of the bird’s length! Even though it looks big and heavy, it’s actually pretty light because it is hollow and made of keratin (like your fingernails) with thin rods of bone to support it.
