Sampdoria are set to appoint Andrea Pirlo as their new manager as the club seeks an immediate return to Serie A.
According to Sky Sport, Sampdoria's new ownership have chosen Pirlo to succeed Dejan Stankovic, who left the club following their relegation to Serie B.
Pirlo was the second choice for the role, with fellow 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Fabio Grosso having turned down the position.
New Sampdoria owner Andrea Radrizzani was convinced to appoint Pirlo after holding three meetings with the 44-year-old.
Radrizzani had targeted appointing a young and progressive coach who could reflect the history of Italian football.

Radrizzani chose the former Juventus coach after being impressed with the experience he had gained working in Turkey, despite a mixed spell at Fatih Karagumruk.
Pirlo was sacked last month after less than one season in charge, with the team lying ninth in the table.
Karagumruk had finished eighth the previous season.
Sampdoria will mark Pirlo's first job in Italy since he left Juventus in 2021.
Pirlo had led Juventus to the Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup during his sole season as manager.
