黃梔屬常綠灌木或喬木，臺灣原生，中國華南各省、中南半島及日本亦有分佈。樹皮灰白色。對生橢圓形至倒卵狀披針形葉，兩面光滑無毛；托葉包莖。花白色，大而顯著，具濃郁香味，頂生或少數為腋生。卵形或橢圓形漿果，具5~8稜，宿存萼片冠狀，成熟時橘黃色或橘紅色；種子多數，隱藏於肉質的胎座上。

An evergreen shrub or tree in the genus Gardenia, native to Taiwan, also distributed in southern China, Indochina Peninsula, and Japan. Bark gray. Leaves opposite, oval to obovate lanceolate, smooth and glabrous on both sides; stipules amplexicaul. Flowers white, large and showy, with a rich fragrance, mostly apical and less axillary. Berries oval or elliptical, with 5-8 ribs, persistent sepal coronal in shape, orange or orange-red when mature; seeds numerous and hidden on fleshy placenta.

適合全日照或半日照溫暖環境，土壤以富含有機質的壤土且排水良好者為宜。以種子、扦插或壓條繁殖。

It suitably grows in warm environments with full sun or partial sun. The soil is preferably well-drained loams rich in organic matter. Propagated by seeds, cuttings or layering.

可作庭園景觀樹、盆花、綠籬。花曬乾可供花茶香料。成熟果實可提取梔子黃色素，可作黃色染料，是食品及化粧工業之天然色素。果實是綠底小灰蝶幼蟲的食草。成熟果乾燥後可入藥，有清熱利尿、瀉火除煩、涼血解毒之效。

It can be used as a garden landscape tree, potted flower plant and a green hedge. The dried flowers can be used to make scented tea. The mature fruits can extract gardenia yellow pigment which is a natural yellow dye used in food and cosmetics industries; it’s also a food source of Artipe eryx horiella larvae; the dried fruits have medicinal uses, such as clearing heat and diuretic, relieving heat and fretfulness, cooling blood and detoxifying.
