Olivia Wilde is many things—a director, a wonderful mother, a loving partner to Jason Sudeikis, a smart, talented actress—but, uh, old is not how I would describe the 32-year-old (yes, 32!!!). But surprise, surprise, Hollywood's ageism strikes again: Olivia just revealed that she didn't land a role in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street because she was considered quote-unquote "too sophisticated" (read: not 25 years old or younger).
"The funniest thing I heard recently was, I heard that I was too sophisticated [for The Wolf of Wall Street]," she told The Howard Stern Show. "I thought, 'Oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn't get the part, but I'm a very sophisticated person.' And then I found out later they actually said old."
Now, Olivia didn't elaborate on which role she didn't get—but there aren't very many female roles in the film, so it's safe to assume that she was likely up for Margot Robbie's part as the second wife of Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Jordan Belfort. (And, for reference, Leo is 41 years old, Margot is 25, and, again, remember that Olivia is only 32.) Cool, Hollywood. Real cool.
But even though she didn't get the part, Olivia thinks Margot did a great job: "I thought she kicked so much ass in that movie." And it's how she met The Wolf of Wall Street director and producer Martin Scorsese, who now is the executive producer on Olivia's current project, HBO's Vinyl, so silver linings, I guess? "It shows that if you don't get something…it might lead to something else," she said.
