There's a chill in the air and leaves on the ground, which means it's time to check out some fresh outerwear. The best fall jackets for men are light enough to function in a range of temperatures, resilient enough to deal with some wind and rain, and neutral enough to match anything in your closet. Men have more fall jacket options to pick from than ever before. Old standbys like trucker jackets, the Harringtons, and barn coats are just as stylish as ever, while modern looks like ultralight rain jackets and nylon bombers have been added to the mix. They all look great but when picking out fall jackets for men, you want to focus on versatility first.

Fall is layering season because you’re facing unpredictable temperatures. Unlike heavy winter coats that we tend to take off indoors, lighter fall jackets see much more time on our backs. That means you should always think of your fall jacket as part of your everyday fit. This is why a lot of designs have collars and fit more like a blazer than a parka. You should also stick to neutral colors like navy blue, brown, and gray. This will allow your jackets to work well with a wide range of fall clothing.

Last, but not least, your fall jacket should be lightweight. You want a fall jacket to be weather-resistant enough to handle wind, rain, and chilly nights. However, you want to be just as comfortable wearing it with a T-shirt on warmer days, as you would with a cable-knit sweater and scarf on a chilly evening. So keep insulation to a minimum and keep the fit a little loose, especially in the shoulders. Don’t be hesitant to size up if needed, because all the fall jackets for men on this list will look good with everything you wear.

You may associate Canada Goose with heavy winter parkas, but the outerwear favorite also makes exceptional mid-weight fall jackets. The Faber Bomber is constructed from AcclimaLuxe, a proprietary nylon fabric that is soft to the touch but exceptionally weather resistant. It can handle strong winds and a good amount of rain. Two exterior pockets feature subtle zipper closures but ample cargo space.

We love a good bomber jacket like this one, because it creates a sleek silhouette. The minimalist vibe makes for easy styling, just add jeans and some Chelsea boots for a crewneck sweatshirt and sneakers. It's dressy enough for work and casual enough for weekend errands. Deputy Commerce Editor Christian Gollayan says he's been using this bomber since May 2023, and works just as well for fall.

Flint and Tinder Flannel-lined Waxed Trucker Jacket

Flannel-lined Waxed Trucker Jacket

Flint and Tinder Flannel-lined Waxed Trucker Jacket

Ample screen time in The Last of Us catapulted Flint and Tinder's Waxed Canvas Jacket from cult favorite to menswear sensation. It has been near to top of Huckberry's bestselling items for years now, and for good reason. Waxed canvas is rugged and weather resistant with a marbled leather-like texture. If you re-wax it once every other year or so, it will take on a beautiful patina and only get better with age.

You would think that a trucker jacket doesn't dress up well, but this one does. While it naturally goes well with flannel and denim, it also looks good with a blazer and slacks or even a suit. We especially love the way it looks with dark brown dress shoes.

Corduroy Dylan Jacket in Rust

The Dylan Jacket is an elevated take on a trucker jacket that has become a signature piece in Todd Snyder's lineup. It comes in a variety of fabrics—like an ultra-luxe Italian suede and a classic denim—but we prefer splitting the difference with a velvety soft corduroy. It provides a more elevated look than denim while not being as delicate as suede. Color options change seasonally, with rust, slate gray, and black currently available.

The best fall jackets should blend in enough to work with a wide range of outfits, as the Corduroy Dylan Jacket certainly does. However, we love the way this jacket can carry an outfit on its own. When worn with a white t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, it steals the show.

Buck Mason Ridge Wool Upland Jacket

Ridge Wool Upland Jacket

Buck Mason Ridge Wool Upland Jacket

Wool button down jackets have been a fall menswear essential for generations. Based on old hunting jackets, the Buck Mason Ridge Wool Upland Jacket is dripping with timeless style. The 14 oz brush wool twill is soft to the touch but insulating and weather resistant. The lower front pockets are two way, offering side vents for your hands. All four pockets have snap closures to keep your stuff secure.

Our favorite feature of this jacket is the deep navy blue color. Similar to a peacoat but less bulky, that select shade of blue looks good with everything. It brightens up in the sunlight while appearing almost black at night. It provides the perfect anchor to accessories like ribbed beanies and plaid scarves.

Relwen Flyweight Flex Blazer

Flyweight Flex Blazer

Relwen Flyweight Flex Blazer

Part blazer, part fall jacket, the Flyweight Flex Blazer from Relwen pulls double duty. A few understated-but-useful features set this blazer apart from most others. The first is the four button closure, plus a throat latch. This allows you to close it all the way up to your jawline like a jacket. Next is the exceptional cargo capacity provided by three oversized exterior pockets, along with a zip closure interior pocket, and a snap closure exterior pocket between the vents in the back. The whole thing is made out of a flexible and weather-resistant cotton-spandex fabric.

No occasion is a bad time for a blazer. This particular one allows you to look buttoned up while its tough fabric can protect you when the weather gets gnarly. That's why our editors love it as an office jacket.

Farm jackets like the Ashby and Bedale get most of the attention, but Barbour makes plenty of excellent waxed cotton jackets. One of its best models available right now is the Sapper. It is based on Barbour's British motorcycle jacket design with four front flap pockets, a high snap neck, and tabs on the cuffs. There is an additional side zip pocket on the chest, as well as an interior pocket. A snap placket conceals the zipper to seal off the wind and rain.

Few jackets combine style and functionality as well as a Barbour coat. If you live in a city and spend most of your time on you feet, you'll love the Sapper's exceptional pocket space and weather-resistant shell.

Lands' End Classic Squall Jacket

Classic Squall Jacket

Lands' End Classic Squall Jacket

Offering a nautical take on a Harrington jacket, the Lands' End Squall Jacket has been a brand favorite since the '80s. Waterproof fabric, a high zip neck, thick elastic cuffs, and sealed pockets provide ample protection against cold temps and heavy rain. Our editors who have tested this say it is insulated enough to keep you warm without feeling bulky.

We're fans of the slightly retro-preppy vibes of the red color, but the black, navy, and olive colors provide a much more modern look. Go with the red if you like nautical style and want to stand out a bit. However, the black, navy, and olive options offer more versatile styling.

Nothing is cozier than high pile fleece jacket when that fall chill sets in. Patagonia was one of the pioneering outdoor clothing brands behind fleece zip-ups and the Classic Retro-X is as quintessential as it gets. Elastic bands on the cuffs and waist keep your body heat locked in, while three zip pockets keep your stuff secure and water proof.

High pile fleece goes really well with outdoors apparel and athleisure but it also plays nice with more elevated clothing like chinos. We like the look best with an oxford shirt and jeans.

Baracuta G9 Cotton-Blend Harrington Jacket

G9 Cotton-Blend Harrington Jacket

Baracuta G9 Cotton-Blend Harrington Jacket

Baracuta has become synonymous with the Harrington jacket, one of the greatest options for fall outwear. Specific details of the G9, like the raglan sleeves, button flap pockets, and two button throat latch collar, are recognized as standard issue for this style of jacket. Think of this as OG athleisure, built for sporty activities in a high-end package.

Don't let the lowkey appearance of this jacket fool you, it is constructed with the highest degree of craftsmanship. Barabcuta jackets have been make in England since 1937 and developed a reputation for exceptional quality. It is a true IYKYK piece.

Lululemon Storm Field StretchSeal Long Jacket

Storm Field StretchSeal Long Jacket

Lululemon Storm Field StretchSeal Long Jacket

Some fall days, you just need a good raincoat. One of the best options out there is the Storm Field Long Jacket from Lululemon. Technically, it is a bonded rain parka, which is a style of jacket innovated in Scotland where it rains A LOT. It covers the body down to the knees, has extra long sleeves, a large hood, and high neck. All the seams of the jacket are bonded for water tight seals and all three exterior pockets have waterproof flaps.

Along with being an exceptional raincoat, we love this jacket for the color. The creamy light khaki is so easy to style with both casual and formal looks. It resembles a classic trench coat.

Denim jackets are great, and adding a a sherpa lining (like Wrangler's OG Western Coat) makes them even better. You get the same cool look with just enough warmth to get you through to winter. Plus, denim jackets go with just about any look.

Cowboys and rockstars have made denim jackets look cool but you don't have to be either to pull one off. The look works for anyone, no matter how conservative your personal style is. If you really want to go for it though, we can't turn down the denim-on-denim look of a jacket paired with jeans.

Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket

Stormchaser Jacket

Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket

A good waterproof windbreaker jacket is never a bad choice during the fall. Mack Weldon makes an excellent option with the Stormchaser Jacket. Its smooth exterior features inset pockets, a high-zip neck, adjustable hood, and velcro cuffs. Taped seams ensure a water-tight interior with six bonded pockets to keep moisture out. The whole thing is ultra lightweight and breathable.

This jacket works great for outdoor activities like hiking because of how breathable the fabric is. Plus, we love that it packs up really well for travel and camping. However the Stormchaser also works great as an off-duty jacket.

Faherty Doug Good Feather Reversible Bondi Jacket

Doug Good Feather Reversible Bondi Jacket

Faherty Doug Good Feather Reversible Bondi Jacket

Faherty partnered with Native American artist Doug Goodfeather to create a thoughtful jacket. One side shows off a geometric southwestern pattern in various shades of blue, with a dash of orange and white, while the other side is a dark denim blue. Both sides have snap-flap chest pockets and two side vent hand pockets.

As nice as the denim looks, the real appeal for us is the authentic Native American pattern. When you wear this out, you also get to show off the denim as an accent under the collar, cuffs, and placket. This is a perfect weekend and night out jacket.

J.Crew Harrington Jacket in Cotton Twill

Harrington Jacket in Cotton Twill

J.Crew Harrington Jacket in Cotton Twill

Most harrington jackets feature a two button throat latch collar, but this pointed collar variety from J.Crew still qualifies. The center simple zip closure, two vent pockets, and elastic cuffs and waist all fit the bill. This style of jacket has been a menswear favorite for so long because it is easy to style. Basically, you can throw it over anything and it works.

Some people would also call this a "golf jacket" because it has been a long time staple on the links. We like the way it looks with a polo shirt and simple flat front dress pants.

Alex Mill Frontier Jacket in Recycled Canvas

Frontier Jacket in Recycled Canvas

Alex Mill Frontier Jacket in Recycled Canvas

Alex Mill is known for putting modern twists on classic American designs like the barn coat. The Frontier Jacket has a boxy fit with the double hand pockets, typical of a barn coat. However, the chest pocket and collar shape are borrowed from a chore coat, making the overall look just a little fancier.

You can go both rugged and refined with this jacket. We like the way it balances out a collared shirt and dress pants. At the same time, it can level up jeans and some Chelsea boots. Style it more like a casual blazer, rather than a rugged work coat.

What to Look for in Fall Jackets

line break

Layering: Fall style is all about layering, so you want jackets that work as outer layers for many different outfits. That means \ you should stick to lighter weight fabrics without thick insulation. Loose and boxy fit jackets are in style right now anyway, but that sillhoutte also allows you to comfortably wear hoodies, sweaters, and thick wool shirts underneath without feeling too snug. If a jacket is cut a little trim, consider buying one size up from what you normally wear.

Weather Resistance: Spring may be the wet season, but fall gets just as much wind and rain in most parts of the world. That's why you want a fall jacket that can handle inclement weather. Look for water resistant fabrics, and bonded seams are always a plus. A big collar that you can flip up to protect you from the wind is nice, but a hood is even better. Most brands will list a jacket’s weather resistance in the description. For example, canvas and corduroy are wind resistant, while waxed cotton and nylon have the added benefit of water resistance.

Neutral Colors: Fall jackets don’t need to be in an autumnal color pallet. You want your top layer to be neutral enough that it matches whatever you’re throwing it over. Stick to colors like navy blue, charcoal gray, khaki, and black. Earth tones work well too, like olive and burnt orange. Fall jackets, more so than heavier winter coats, expose what you’re wearing underneath. Think about your favorite hoodies, sweaters, flannel shirts, and oxfords when you’re picking a jacket color. Go with a color that will compliment as much as possible in your fall wardrobe.
