Liverpool's search for a new manager looks set to step up a notch during the international break.

The Reds are looking for a replacement for outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp - the German having announced his Anfield exit back in January. Former midfielder Xabi Alonso has emerged as an outstanding candidate.

Away from the dugout, Liverpool are making a host of changes behind the scenes. Michael Edwards has already returned to the club following a previous spell.

He might not be the only one to be tempted to put pen to paper on a switch to Merseyside this year. Take a look at all of the standout headlines to come out of Anfield over the past 24 hours:

Three clubs eye Xabi Alonso

Three clubs are "working on a deal" to sign Xabi Alonso, according to Bayern Munich's honorary president Uli Hoeness. The former midfielder has become one of the most exciting young managers in world football.

He has been touted for a move to Bayern, while Liverpool are also interested. Speaking about a potential swoop for the Spaniard, Hoeness said: "He's [Alonso's] proven that he can be a coach for the big time. Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it."

He added: "There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don't have a job or who are on sabbatical. It's not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things."

Reds edge towards Burchill appointment

Away from the managerial hot seat, Liverpool could also have a new scout on their books. The Reds are preparing to bring in Bournemouth chief scout Mark Burchill.

Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes has headhunted Burchill as a potential addition to the club’s scouting staff. Should a move happen, he would join the Reds recruitment team of chief scout Barry Hunter and head of recruitment Dave Fallows.

They will all work under Michael Edwards as the club remoulds its football department this summer. Burchill and Hughes were teammates at Portsmouth during their playing days in the 2000s.

Alexander-Arnold eyes return

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is eyeing a return to the pitch for Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United next month. The right-back has been out of action since early February.

He suffered a recurrence of a knee ligament injury and has been sidelined ever since. Alexander-Arnold could potentially be fit to face Sheffield United after the international break but Jurgen Klopp believes the showdown with the Red Devils on April 7 to be more realistic. He has upped his training during the international break at the club’s Kirkby base in an effort to return to the pitch.
