Luftwaffe FW Triebflügel

The Plane:

The Focke Wulf Triebflügel was a concept of a vertical take of and landing fighter aircraft developed in the last years of WW2. It was never build, only windtunnel models were made at that time.

It was planned to use those kind of planes outside of airfields, a snall part of free land would be needed to start and land the plane.

The craft was powered by three ramjet engines mounted at the edge of the wings. To create enough spped to ignite the ramjets, simple rockes should power the wing rotation at startup.

The model shows a FW Triebflügel preparing for take-off in 1946.









The Model:

The is a 1/72 scale Huma kit, the only one I know of this aircraft. The kit was quite simple but it did fit ok, only the landing gear weas a bit fragine to build. Build OOB it is airbrushed with Revell Aqua Color, sone addtional decals were added fomr the spare part box.

Top notch . Always loved the look of the Triebflugel...I remember them in a comic I used to read around the 2000s called Luft 46 or something. Wonder how they would fared in combat.

Whose base did you use?

I wonder how the gyroscopic forces from that big prop have affected handling?

I got the base diorama from ebay a few years ago, but I do not know the manufacturer. It was plain white, so I had to paint it and added some gras&flowers from model train accessories.

You've made a cracking job of that, most impressive, specially with the diorama base as well. 

I've got one of those Huma kits somewhere in The Loft, but I'm darned if I could find it some months ago when I looked. 

I recall that it's a good fitting kit, I've done some dry assembly already, and I wish I could think of a way to Whiff it, but it already IS one.

Yes, it did quite well, only the wings were a bit problematic to put in position. And as oyu say - as it is already a what if, how to whatif even more ?

That's a lovely looking little diorama 

Built the Huma kit myself, its been to a few shows, and is a really nice build.

It'd look good with long thin wings in addition to the rotor.

Great little diorama! 

In more recent incarnations the triebflugels are "naturally" massacring the Sea Vampires and Fireflies of the British and French navies attacking the secret base in Antarctica, Aliens have just joined the fight, against both sides after destroying the D-Day with a freak "storm" and Hitler's ghost seems to be back, apparently for revenge...

Sounds like the plot to an Iron Sky sequel.

We all know that the secret base in Antarctica did not exist.... But there is a secret in Neuschwabenland which I will uncover in another thread soon......
