白 千 層 (Melaleuca quinquenervia) 的 樹 幹 披 著 一 層 一 層 灰 白 色 的 樹 皮 , 樹 皮<br />

更 像 重 重 疊 著 的 紙 張 , 獨 特 非 常 , 怪 不 得 它 的 名 字 叫 「 白 千 層 」, 果 然 名<br />

副 其 實 。 白 千 層 在 香 港 十 分 常 見 , 在 路 邊 或 郊 外 也 常 常 找 到 。 它 的 樹 皮 外<br />

型 雖 然 像 紙 一 般 , 又 是 軟 軟 的 , 但 原 來 並 不 脆 弱 , 更 是 有 極 強 的 適 應 力 ,<br />

即 使 在 貧 瘠 土 壤 、 乾 旱 , 甚 或 水 淹 , 白 千 層 都 可 頑 強 地 生 長 。<br />

Paper-bark Tree (Melaleuca quinquenervia) can be identified by the greyish<br />

white bark that resembles layers of paper on its trunk. A common tree<br />

species in Hong Kong, it can be found frequently along roadsides and<br />

throughout the countryside. Although it looks made of soft paper, the tree is<br />

not fragile at all. It is highly adaptable and can grow well in poor soil, and dry<br />

or submerged environments.

起 白 千 層 , 就 令 人 想 到 它 的 樹 皮 ,<br />

灰 白 色 的 樹 皮 會 不 斷 地 剝 掉 脫 落 ,<br />

樹 皮 像 一 層 層 紙 張 被 撕 開 似 的 , 一 層 比 一<br />

層 更 潔 白 , 因 此 它 的 英 文 俗 名 叫 Paper-bark<br />

Tree, 意 即 「 紙 皮 樹 」。 按 摸 一 下 樹 皮 ,<br />

質 感 軟 軟 的 , 如 海 棉 一 樣 , 十 分 有 趣 。 白<br />

千 層 的 葉 片 尖 尖 長 長 , 葉 脈 平 行 , 質 感 頗<br />

厚 。 拾 起 一 塊 葉 片 把 之 揉 碎 , 一 陣 清 香 撲<br />

鼻 , 令 人 精 神 為 之 一 振 , 原 來 葉 片 帶 有 精<br />

油 , 稱 為 白 千 層 油 、 玉 樹 油 或 白 樹 油 。 精<br />

油 具 藥 用 功 效 , 是 一 些 著 名 藥 油 的 成 分 。<br />

除 了 精 油 , 它 的 樹 皮 更 可 用 於 製 造 船 篷 及<br />

蓋 屋 頂 , 木 材 則 堅 硬 細 緻 , 可 用 於 建 築 和<br />

製 作 家 具 。<br />

白 千 層 的 花 , 外 形 如 刷 洗 奶 瓶 的 奶 樽<br />

刷 , 開 花 時 一 串 串 的 掛 滿 樹 上 , 十 分 別<br />

緻 。 這 些 奶 樽 刷 其 實 是 由 很 多 小 花 組 成 ,<br />

小 花 的 花 瓣 不 明 顯 , 但 它 們 長 而 稠 密 的 雄<br />

蕊 整 齊 地 排 起 來 , 令 花 朵 看 起 來 如 奶 樽 刷<br />

一 樣 。 開 花 過 後 , 木 質 的 蒴 果 成 串 貼 於 枝<br />

條 上 , 好 久 也 不 會 掉 落 。 果 實 成 熟 時 , 頂<br />

端 裂 開 , 細 小 的 種 子 便 會 隨 風 飄 散 。<br />

要 欣 賞 白 千 層 , 不 妨 到 訪 城 門 水 塘 , 那<br />

裡 水 邊 種 滿 一 排 排 高 大 的 白 千 層 , 樹 幹 雪<br />

白 蒼 勁 , 水 塘 波 光 泛 影 , 映 照 成 一 片 水 上<br />

樹 林 。 當 水 塘 水 位 高 時 , 水 浸 白 千 層 更 是<br />

詩 情 畫 意 !<br />

shed, exposing the whiter inner part. The<br />

bark feels soft like a sponge. The leaves of<br />

the tree are slender and sharp, with parallel<br />

veins and thick texture. If you crush a leaf<br />

on your hand, you will smell refreshing<br />

fragrance. The leaf contains cajeput oil that<br />

is a constituent of medicinal oil. Apart from<br />

the oil, its bark can be used to make boat<br />

mats or house roofs. Its wood is tough and<br />

fine and can be used in building and furniture<br />

making.<br />

Paper-bark Tree has flowers that are<br />

bottlebrush-like, hanging in strings on<br />

the tree when in bloom. These “bottlebrushes”<br />

are in fact clusters of tiny flowers<br />

with inconspicuous petals. But they have<br />

long, dense stamens that are in orderly<br />

arrangements, like bristles on a brush. After<br />

blooming, the strings of wooden capsules<br />

stick to the branches for a long time. When<br />

the fruits are mature, the top cracks open<br />

and the tiny seeds are spread by wind.<br />

where rows of tall trees line the waterfront.<br />

The snowy white tree trunks reflected in<br />

the tranquil water make it all so impressive,<br />

particularly when the water level is high and<br />

適 應 力 強<br />

Highly adaptable<br />

白 千 層 是 外 來 品 種 , 由 澳 洲 引 入 , 為 香<br />

港 早 年 常 用 的 植 林 及 行 道 樹 品 種 。 它 的 適<br />

應 力 十 分 強 , 在 土 壤 貧 瘠 的 土 地 、 乾 旱 或<br />

水 淹 的 環 境 都 能 生 長 , 能 抗 蟲 害 , 又 耐 環<br />

境 污 染 , 加 上 抗 風 力 強 , 可 作 防 風 樹 種 。<br />

而 且 樹 幹 內 層 不 易 燃 燒 , 一 旦 發 生 山 火 ,<br />

可 以 阻 延 火 勢 蔓 延 。<br />

由 於 白 千 層 的 適 應 力 強 , 分 布 廣 泛 , 繁<br />

殖 能 力 又 高 , 讓 它 成 為 了 厲 害 的 入 侵 品 種 ,<br />

《 國 際 自 然 及 自 然 資 源 保 育 聯 盟 》(IUCN)<br />

已 把 它 列 為 100 種 最 入 侵 性 品 種 之 一 。 白 千<br />

層 在 美 國 佛 羅 里 達 州 造 成 嚴 重 的 生 態 破 壞 ,<br />

它 改 變 了 當 地 原 有 的 生 境 , 與 原 生 的 物 種 競<br />

爭 , 令 當 地 的 生 物 多 樣 性 驟 降 。<br />

Paper-bark Tree is an exotic species<br />

introduced from Australia. It was widely<br />

cultivated as plantation and roadside<br />

trees in earlier years, as it has high<br />

adaptability and can grow well in poor<br />

soil, dry or submerged environments, and<br />

resists pests and pollution. The species<br />

can withstand strong winds, so is also<br />

planted as a windshield. The inner layers<br />

of the trunk are nonflammable, so the<br />

trees can stop a fire from spreading in the<br />

event of a hillfire.<br />

Because of its high adaptability and<br />

reproductive ability and wide distribution,<br />

Paper-bark Tree is widely distributed and<br />

is a vigorous invasive species. The IUCN<br />

has listed it among the world’s top 100<br />

invasive species. The species has caused<br />

great ecological damage in Florida, U.S.<br />

by changing the original habitats and<br />

competing with native species. The local<br />

biodiversity has declined drastically.<br />
