-IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE GRATES.

Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 14.5441, dated December 2, 1873; application led March 19, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JONATHAN E. WOOD, of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Grates, of which the following is a speciiication:l

This invention relates to certain improvements in re-grates, whereby the grate may be turned over backward to get it ont of the way for put-ting in a summer front to the grate, the grate being suspended at the top corners-by lugs playing in sockets in the sides of the grate-front.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front View. Fig. 2 is a ,vertical section of my improved grate.

A represents a gratefront of the usual pat tern, to the sides of which are cast ears a. B is a grate-basket, also having lugs or ears b at the upper corners, which have pins or journals, resting in sockets in the ears a. The lower rear side of the grate-basket B restsagainst the back part of the lire-place. A springcatch, C, is set in the back wall, for latching the basket to prevent its being lifted or turned while poking when lire is in the grate. At the top of the fire-place, in the'throat ofthe chimney, is a damper, D, pivoted at the'front corners, which may be thrown up, as seen in the dotted lines, for opening theI draft to the chimney. It does not entirely close the draft when down, but causes the smoke to come forward to enter the chimney, and also throws the heat outward.

I claim* The combination and arrangement of the pivoted basket B, spring-catch C, and damperD with the gratefront A, as shown and described, and. for the purpose set forth.
