AUDIOVISUAL JUKEBOX
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a jukebox and, more particularly, to a jukebox which can be utilised in places of entertainment such as bars, restaurants and the like, to provide music according to customers tastes.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Jukeboxes are known and have been extensively used in places of entertainment such as bars, hospitality establishments and restaurants to offer patrons of such establishments a selection of a music against payment of a fee.
Early jukeboxes were generally coin feed apparata and the music selection was provided by way of traditional vinyl records. Such jukeboxes were maintenance intensive and suffered from the disadvantage that the quality of sound reproduction offered by a jukebox deteriorated over time due to wearing of the vinyl records with repeated use thereof.
The advent of compact discs (CD's) as a medium for storing music, in which the music is stored in digital form with resultant capacity for high quality reproduction thereof, led to the substitution of vinyl records in jukeboxes by such CDs. The playback of music
stored on a CD is achieved by means of a contactless method, and the use of CDs thus eliminated the earlier problem of wear associated with conventional vinyl recordings
Such CD based jukeboxes still have a disadvantage in that the selection of music may only be changed by replacing the CDs in the jukebox, which is problematic where a number of jukeboxes, spread over a geographically extended area need to be serviced in this manner Failure to update the music selection in a jukebox at regular intervals to satisfy customers tastes will lead to a drop in revenue provided by the jukebox
Further, the collection of revenue from jukeboxes of the coin freed variety is labour intensive, and difficult to administer in an effective manner by licensors of such jukeboxes It has become expedient for a licensor to base a jukebox to an operator of a hospitality for a fixed rental in order to avoid problems associated with revenue collection The licensor is thus prohibited from deriving income from the jukebox in direct proportion to its use
Musical performances by recording artists have evolved from having only an aural component, to also include a visual component as well, as illustrated by the concept of the well known "music video" Prior art jukeboxes as described above generally do not enable the playback of a musical performance in multimedia fashion, as required by music videos
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a jukebox and a method of operation thereof which will, at least partially, alleviate the abovementioned difficulties and disadvantages

The invention extends to a method of operation of a jukebox, comprising the steps of receiving a musical performance transmitted along a wireless communication channel, storing the received musical performance in a storage means in a digital format, and selectively playing the stored musical performance against payment of a fee
There is further provided for receiving a plurality of musical performances transmitted along the wireless communication channel, storing the received plurality of musical performances in the storage means, and selectively playing any desired one of the stored plurality of musical performances, for selectively playing any desired one of the stored plurality of musical performances by the steps of compiling a play list of the stored musical performances, displaying the play list on a display, accepting a selection from the play list by a user of the jukebox; and activating a playback means to play the selected musical performance
There is still provided for storing an audio component of a musical performance in an MP3 digital format, for stoπng a visual component of a musical performance in an MPEG-2 digital format, and for the decoding the audio and visual components of the selected musical performance prior to playback
There is yet further provided for the method to include the further step of broadcasting the musical performance to the jukebox along the wireless communication channel, for broadcasting the musical performance as part of a television broadcast signal, and for broadcasting the musical performance in the VBI of the television broadcast signal.
There is also provided for playing the audio component of the selected musical performance on a speaker, for displaying the video component of the selected musical performance on a plasma display panel, for communicating with a control centre remote from the jukebox, and for transmitting to the control centre data relating to usage of the jukebox.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One embodiment of the invention is described below, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
F1G.1 is a schematic representation of a jukebox according to the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figure 1 , a jukebox is indicated generally by reference numeral (1). The jukebox (1 ) includes storage means (2) in the form of a magnetic disk, a radio frequency receiver (3), playback means comprising a speaker (4) and a plasma display panel (5), and a controller (6), the operation of which will be described in more detail below.
The magnetic disk (2) is capable of storing a number of different musical performances thereon, each performance including an audio component and, optionally, a corresponding video component. In order to conserve storage space, the audio component of the musical performances is stored in an MP3 digital format, whilst that of the video component of the musical μerfoimances is stored in a MPEG-2 format, both of which are digital compression formats wπich are well-known in the art.
The controller (6) is programmed to compile a play list of the stored musical performances in the magnetic disk (2), the play list being presented to a user of the jukebox (1) on a touch screen panel (7)
The controller (6) is programmed to respond to a coin-freed apparatus (8) to selectively play any one of the number of different stored musical performances appearing on the play list, as selected by the user on the touch screen (7). The selected musical performance is played by decoding the audio component of the musical performance by means of an MP3 decoder (not shown) in the controller (6), and by decoding the video component of the selected performance by means of an MPEG-2 decoder (not shown) in the controller The decoded audio and video components are played and displayed on the speaker (4) and on the plasma display screen (5), respectively
The coin-freed apparatus (8) is designed to receive coins or, alternatively, a token such as a magnetic or a smart card or, further alternatively, the apparatus (8) is operable by means of a wireless application protocol(WAP) enabled device
In use, the receiver (3) of the jukebox (1) receives musical performances in a digital format broadcast from a broadcast transmitter (10) along a communication channel (11) In this embodiment, this communication channel (11 ) is a television broadcast communication channel and the musical performances are transmitted in the Vertical Blanking Interval of a television broadcast signal transmitted by the broadcast transmitter (10), this method of data transmission being well known in the art The audio and video components of the musical performances are transmitted in the MP3 and MPEG-2 compressed digital formats, respectively
The jukebox (1) is communicable with a control centre (12) remote from the jukebox through a secondary communication channel (13) In this embodiment, the secondary communication channel (13) is a conventional telecommunication loop having modems (14) at the jukebox-end and the control centre-end of the telecommunication
loop In use, the jukebox (1) transmits data relating to usage of the jukebox along the secondary communication channel (13) to the control centre (12)
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the ability to transmit musical performances to the jukebox (1) "over the air" enables the play list of the jukebox to be updated at regular intervals without requiring a physical attendance at the site of the jukebox Further, the downloading of usage data to a control centre removes the difficulty associated with the collection of revenue from the jukebox The revenue can be collected and deposited by the operator of a site where the jukebox (1) is installed The usage data transmitted to the control centre (12) enables the licensor of the jukebox to debit the site owner for proven usage of the jukebox (1 ), thereby allowing the licensor to derive income in direct proportion to use of the jukebox The usage data may be conveniently employed to perform data analysis of listener and viewer preferences for the stored musical performances
Numerous modifications are possible to this embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention In particular, the audio and video components of the musical performances may be stored in the magnetic disk (2) in uncompressed format, or by employing compression formats other than the MP3 and MPEG-2 in accordance with the needs of a particular application Still further, the audio and video components of the musical work can be stored in an encrypting format Yet further, the usage data may be transmitted to the control centre (12) by means of a secondary communication channel of a type other than a telecommunication loop, such as a dedicated private data network. Finally, the communication channel (11 ) may be satellite communication channel instead of a television broadcast communjcation channel
The invention therefore provides a novel jukebox which can have its selection updated, and can have its usage monitored, remotely by a proprietor of the jukebox
The invention therefore provides a jukebox, and a method of operation thereof which allows for automatic updating of the musical selection in the jukebox from a remote location
