Abstract

A service application surveys the functional elements available on a user's network, and surveys the availability of applications that may utilize combinations of these functional elements to achieve capabilities that are not realizable with individual devices. Each device on a user's network may have one or more functional elements that are available for use with functional elements of other devices on the user's network. The service application identifies applications that utilize a plurality of the functional elements on the user's network. The user has the option of selecting one or more of these applications for installation. The service application downloads the application, drivers, and other utility programs, as required, to one or more devices in the user's system, and configures the devices as required for operating with the application. Optionally, the service application identifies missing functional elements for available applications as well.

Claims

11 CLAIMS:
1. A service application (400) comprising: a comparator (410) that is configured to compare an inventory (230) of existing functional elements (211-213, 221-222) of devices (210, 220) on a home network (100) to a set of required functional elements (241, 245) of one or more available applications (281), and a reporter (420), operably coupled to the comparator (410), that is configured to report results from the comparator (410) to a user of the service application (400).
2. The service application (400) of claim 1 , further including a function identifier (430) that is configured to facilitate creation of the inventory (230) of existing functional elements (211-213, 221-222) on the home network (100).
3. - The service application (400) of claim 1, further including an application search engine (440) that is configured to facilitate a determination of the one or more available applications (281).
4. The service application (400) of claim 1, further including a function identifier (430) that is configured to facilitate identification of the set of required functional elements (241, 245) of the one or more available applications (281).
5. The service application (400) of claim 1, further including a downloader (450) that is configured to facilitate a download of a select one or more applications of the one or more available applications (281) to one or more devices (210, 220) on the home network (100).
6. The service application (400) of claim 5, wherein the downloader (450) is also configured to facilitate a download of drivers that enable the use of the select one or more applications on the home network (100). 12
7. The service application (400) of claim 1, wherein the service application (400) is located on an Internet site.
8. The service application (400) of claim 1, wherein the comparator (410) is further configured to compare the inventory (230) to the set of required functional elements (241, 245) based on a profile of the user.
9. A method of enhancing the utility of devices (210, 220) on a home network (100), comprising : enabling an identification (510) of a plurality of functional elements (211-213, 221-222) of the devices (210, 220) on the home network (100), enabling a comparison (550) of the plurality of functional elements (211-213, 221-222) to a set of required functional elements (241, 245) of one or more available applications (281), and enabling a report of results (570) of the comparison to a user associated with the home network (100).
10. The method of claim 9, further including enabling an identification (520) of the one or more available applications
(281).
11. The method of claim 10, further including enabling an identification (540) of the set of required functional elements (241, 245) of the one or more available applications (281).
12. The method of claim 10, wherein enabling the identification (520) of the one or more available applications (281) is based on a profile that is associated with the user.
13. The method of claim 9, further including enabling a purchase or download (595) of a select one or more applications of the one or more available applications (281).
