Life cycle Sphinx moths develop through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering is commonly as mature larvae or pupae in organic litter on the ground or below the surface of topsoil. In late winter or spring adults emerge from their pupal case, mate, and the females lay eggs.
